Disposal Information by Category
These kinds of waste can be brought to a transfer station for disposal. Accepted waste materials vary slightly by location, so please check accepted materials list before visiting a location.
Scrap metal
Scrap metal such as pots and pans, wire, chain, bike frames, metal furniture, posts, and more should be brought to a transfer station for scrap metal recycling. These items should not be placed in with your regular recycling. There is a small fee to dispose of scrap metal at a transfer station.
Electronics and appliances
Transfer Stations accept both e-waste (electronic items) and appliances for recycling for a fee, which varies by item. Items accepted include, but are not limited to:
- Stoves, washers, dryers
- TVs, VCRs, DVD players and other related items
- Laptops, desktop computer parts, monitors, towers, and computer peripherals such as cables, mice, external drives, etc.
- Printers, scanners, copiers
- Air conditioners, dehumidifiers
- Refrigerators, freezers, coolers
Furniture and bulky waste
Furniture, mattresses, and other bulky waste goes in the bypass bin at a transfer station. These materials are too big to go to the Perham Resource Recovery Facility, and so go directly to a landfill. Fees vary by size of item.
Demolition waste
Demolition waste is any waste resulting from the construction, alteration, or demolition of a building. Otter Tail County operates demolition landfills at the Henning and North East Transfer Stations. Other transfer stations can accept smaller amounts of demolition waste.
Yard waste and brush
The Battle Lake, Henning, North East, and Pelican Rapids Transfer Stations accept leaves and grass clippings at no charge. Brush of up to 3″ in diameter is accepted for a small fee.
Oil, oil filters, and antifreeze
The Fergus Falls, Henning, and Pelican Rapids Transfer Stations have self serve oil dump stations that accept used oil, oil filters, and antifreeze at no charge. Please bring larger amounts of used oil to these self serve stations, smaller amounts of oil can be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Tires
Tires can be disposed of at transfer stations; fees vary by size of tire. Tires are periodically ground for reuse in roads and other projects.
Unacceptable Waste List
The following materials are prohibited from disposal with municipal solid waste (also know as MSW or garbage). Many of these items may be disposed of at a transfer station (see above) or at the Household Hazardous Waste facility.
