Northeast Quadrant Single Sort Recycling

About this project

Otter Tail County has established several guiding principles for solid waste management. One of these is working toward zero landfilling. To continue on this path, Otter Tail County is planning for curbside single sort recycling throughout the County.

We are currently planning for collection services in the northeast quadrant of the county.

Collection will be provided by licensed solid waste collection haulers. Licensed Haulers will be required to provide this service only in the highest density areas.

Anticipated project schedule

Summer 2026Recycling carts will be delivered to residents in the service area. These are paid for by grant funding from the MPCA and come at no cost to residents.
January 2027Haulers are required to provide single sort recycling service to those in the service area outlined below.

Service Area

The Single Sort Recycling Implementation Plan states:

“Curbside Single Sort Collection is most cost effective in high density populated areas. The County requires services to be offered in cities with populations of 500 or more; and on lakefront property for the most densely populated lakes.”

The map below details the coverage area for the northeast quadrant. Recycling service will be available for residents of the cities of Ottertail and New York Mills. Service will also be available to lakefront properties located on the following lakes: Berger, Big McDonald, Big Pine, Buchanan, Dead, Deer, Devils, East Lost, East Silent, Little McDonald, Little Pine, Long, Marion, McDonald, Otter Tail, Paul, Pickerel, Round, Rush, Star, Walker, West McDonald.

Those located in the northeast quadrant but not in a service area can inquire about the possibility of receiving single sort recycling by calling a licensed hauler in their area. Please note, haulers are only required to provide recycling services to those in the designated service area; however, some may extend services beyond what is outlined above.
